Battery Disposal and Recycling Information

At Helavo, sustainability is particularly important to us. Some of our mobility products use batteries to ensure comfort, reliability, and independence – and although these components are small, they have a big impact on our ecological footprint.
That is why we are committed to ensuring that every battery is disposed of in an environmentally sound and legally compliant manner at the end of its life.

Batteries contain valuable materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt, which can be recovered and reused in new products. At the same time, they can contain substances that are harmful to soil, water, and wildlife if not handled properly. By responsibly disposing of and recycling batteries, you help reduce waste, conserve resources, and prevent environmental pollution.
We encourage all customers to share this responsibility.

Do not dispose of with household waste

Used batteries must not be disposed of with household waste. They are marked with special symbols – such as the crossed-out wheeled bin – indicating that they must be collected separately.

The symbol with the crossed-out wheeled bin indicates that the battery must not be disposed of in household waste but must be taken to a separate collection point. This symbol is mandatory for batteries and electrical equipment under EU law and serves to protect the environment and recover valuable materials.

Always hand in old batteries at an authorized collection or return point to avoid environmental damage and comply with legal disposal regulations.

Battery Collection and Recycling

Helavo is registered with REBAT, a certified nationwide take-back system for old batteries. Through this partnership, we ensure that all batteries are collected, treated, and recycled in accordance with strict environmental standards and the requirements of the European Union.

Consumers can drop off used batteries free of charge at official collection points throughout Germany, for example at:
• Municipal recycling centers
• Retail stores that sell batteries or battery-powered devices
• Public collection points such as supermarkets, electronics stores, or hardware stores

All collected batteries are processed via the authorized REBAT recycling system to ensure environmentally sound material recovery and safe disposal of hazardous substances.

By using these collection points, you actively help reduce the need for new raw materials and promote a sustainable circular economy.

Important Notes for the Safe Return of Wheelchairs with Batteries

To ensure your safety and legally compliant transport, please observe the following instructions before returning a wheelchair with a battery to us. The procedure differs depending on whether the battery is damaged or not.

1. If the battery is damaged (e.g., swelling, leakage, deformation, unusual smell, or heat)

Please proceed with extreme caution. Safety is the top priority.

Safety measures:

  • Disconnect the wheelchair from the power supply or charger.

  • Wear protective gloves and safety glasses, especially if there is visible damage.

  • Carefully remove the battery according to the operating instructions.

  • Be careful not to damage any cables.

  • Do not touch any leaked substances.

  • After removal, place the battery on a non-combustible surface.

  • Immediately insulate the battery terminal contacts with non-conductive tape (e.g., electrical tape) to prevent short circuits.

  • Dispose of the damaged battery at an authorized collection point in accordance with legal regulations.

Important:

  • Return the wheelchair without the damaged battery.

  • Be sure to inform our support team that the battery is damaged when you contact us.

Packaging & Return:

  • Ideally, pack the wheelchair in its original box.

  • Use the shipping label that you will receive from our customer service after contacting us.

2. If the battery is not damaged

If the wheelchair is functional and there are no visible or noticeable battery problems.

How to prepare the device for return:

  • Turn off the wheelchair completely.

  • The battery can remain in the wheelchair, but depending on the model, it must be either unplugged or deactivated via the main switch/safety switch.

  • If you are unsure how to secure the battery of your model, please contact our customer service.

Packaging & Return:

  • If possible, use the original packaging.

  • Attach the return label that our team will provide to you.
